Pilates incorporates strength and stability with movement and flexibility.

It is a low impact style exercise that has many benefits including:

  • Increasing body awareness
  • Retraining motor control
  • Posture correction
  • Whole body strengthening and stability
  • Improving joint mobility and flexibility

Combining Physiotherapy and Pilates

Pilates is a mind-body exercise that challenges your core and stretches major muscle groups. The goal is to improve your strength, flexibility, balance and body awareness. The positions and movements require a lot of control and precision, developing the mind-muscle connection.

Pilates often goes hand-in-hand with injury recovery treatments to rehabilitate the muscles. Physiotherapy-style Pilates encourages whole body strength and better coordination, which are two factors that patients need to develop after an injury.

The great thing about Pilates is that everyone can benefit from it. It’s a low-impact exercise, so people recovering from an injury can perform the movements. Those who want to correct their posture, perform better in their workouts, improve their form or increase their stamina can also gain health benefits from clinical pilates sessions.

Our Clinical Pilates in Townsville

All Physiotherapists at NQ Physio Solutions are trained in Clinical Pilates.  If you’re an existing client, your physio may integrate this style of exercise into your treatment program as part of your rehabilitation.  This may include matwork, reformer based exercise or the use of small equipment such as balls, bands or circles.

NQ Physio Solutions offers one-on-one Pilates sessions and group classes from our clinic in Townsville, depending on what you need.

One-On-One Pilates Sessions

If you are new to pilates or have specific needs, individual sessions are available.  The initial appointment may include an assessment of your deep abdominal and pelvic floor activation using Real-time ultrasound.  It is a requirement that a one-on-one appointment is undertaken prior to attending our Physio Led Exercise Classes.

Clinical Pilates Classes

These 45 minute classes are small groups (6 people maximum) led by a Pilates trained Physiotherapist.  You may choose to attend one of our Pilates classes for maintenance after recovery from an injury.  However, we believe everyone can benefit from physio-style Pilates, so we also welcome participants to attend classes for general exercise and well-being.  There is no need to have a one-on-one assessment prior to attending a Pilates Class.  See our Pilates Class Timetable or contact us for more details to book your first class.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Do Pilates If I Have an Injury?

Although Pilates is recommended by many physicians as an injury-rehabilitation treatment, it would still depend on the kind of injury you have suffered and at what point you are in your recovery. Individuals often perform exercises within their own limitations and slowly increase the intensity as they regain their strength and stamina. If you have a current injury, we highly encourage you to start with a private session for a full physical assessment and to discuss your needs before jumping straight into a pilates class.

What’s the Best Way to Get Started in Pilates?

Pilates is an excellent form of exercise to start with for anyone recovering from an injury or getting started on their fitness goals. Taking a group class is fun way to learn Pilates, however, if you have an injury, we recommend starting with at least one private session with one of our physios to familiarise yourself with the basic movements, positions and breathing. This also gives us a chance to observe your body in motion and identify its needs.

How Should I Feel During a Pilates Session?

Pilates is a gentle exercise targeting small, stabilising muscle groups.  While you may not find this a strenuous exercise, you may be surprised to find that some of the exercises are quite challenging and you may experience some mild muscle soreness after a session.  The exercises shouldn’t aggravate any pre-existing conditions or be painful to complete and it is important that you immediately alert your instructor if you have any concerns during or after a session.
